This sighting was one of the highlight of my trip to Kenya. When approaching the Mara river we spotted this elephant herd slightly upset, after a minute or two we realized why. A male lion was making his was through annd the elephants formed a circle to protect the youngsters. Amazing to see! We kept our distace to not bother either one of the animals. Especially in a situation like this you want to keep a little bit of distance to make sure all is well. Although it is very uncommon for a single lion to take down a member of the herd, it is not impossible. These elephants were rather safe than sorry, good for them!
